For the sake of our neighbors, all who believe in the importance of truth must continue to say so.

Yesterday we focused on the battle being waged in our culture against a spiritual enemy who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10, my emphasis). Today let’s add the fact that winning this battle depends greatly upon the use of discernment.

Since objective truth doesn’t exist, justice is left to the eye of the beholder. Once, in a presentation to congressional staffers, Justice Sonia Sotomayor was asked about the foundation of justice in our country. She replied by admitting that she had never considered the question “in that form before.” And then, after a long pause, said something like, “I suppose for me, it would be the inherent dignity of all people. But I don’t know what it should be for anyone else” (emphasis added).

My wife and I saw Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One over the weekend and I understand why one of its actors called it “the biggest action movie of all time.” Without giving away the plot, I can tell you that Ethan Hunt’s enemy this time is the “Entity,” which is essentially Artificial Intelligence on steroids. One reviewer described it as “omnipresent, near-omniscient, and almost intangible, yet it has the potential to send the earth back to the Stone Age.”

Upon reflection, it occurred to me that the movie parallels the real world in a way that is urgently relevant for every Christian, whether we see the film or not.

A recent CBS News article claims, in its very title, in fact, to separate “medical facts from misinformation” around so-called “gender-affirming care.” However, rather than separate the facts from the falsehoods, the article peddles lies and half-truths, assuming the conclusions it claims to prove in a thinly veiled piece of progressive propaganda. And that’s about the nicest thing that can be said about it.

When Sound of Freedom first came out, I was hesitant to see it. As the father of two, there are few things more difficult to watch and contemplate than the horrific abuse and unconscionable evil portrayed in the film. And while none of the heinous acts were shown on camera, the movie leaves no doubt as to the nature of what was done to those precious children.

It’s really hard to watch, and that’s the point. The film doesn’t allow its audience to avoid the pain or ignore the tragedy. And while not every instance of human trafficking will resemble what’s portrayed on the screen—Emily Belz’s article in Christianity Today offers an excellent profile of what it often looks like closer to home—Sound of Freedom still grants us an important glimpse into the horrors faced by far too many around the world.

Yesterday we discussed the importance of making public our faith stories of transformation by God’s grace. Using our influence to promote biblical morality is a vital way we can serve God’s kingdom and advance the common good.

I often joke that because of the number of sci-fi movies about artificial intelligence out there, we’ve already seen how this story ends – with robots taking over the world. So why mess around with it?

Despite my half-hearted protests, AI seems like it is here to stay. AI is creeping up in every corner of our society – from copywriting programs to personalized shopping to autonomous vehicles. It seems like out of “nowhere,” AI is now everywhere.

With this technology becoming a part of our lives more and more each day, Christians may be wondering how they should respond to AI.
