College Double Standard

May 15, 2007

Commencement season brings its usual politicians, actors, activists and once in a while someone with something worth saying to college campuses. Commencements are increasingly held on Sunday mornings these days. Colleges would never think of holding them on Fridays or Saturdays, because that might offend Muslims and Jews. But Sunday when Christians worship is no problem for them.

Universities are becoming more and more Muslim-friendly, allowing behavior for Muslims they deny to Christians and Jews. At the Minneapolis Community and Technical College, tax dollars paid for the installation of special wash basins so Muslims could engage it ritual foot-washing before prayer. The college president made the ludicrous assertion that this isn’t about religion but “customer service and public safety.”

According to the Washington Examiner, at least a dozen other public colleges and universities have installed foot-washing basins. But Christians and other groups get no such consideration. This is discrimination, using tax dollars. Where’s the ACLU? Where’s Americans United for the Separation of Church and State?
