While most of the world is currently concerned with staying healthy amid the COVID-19 pandemic, others have found a new source for panic and alarm that doesn’t stem from the worry of losing lives but making them. Several sources have contended that the condom shortage caused by coronavirus adds a high probability to an anticipated baby boom in nine or so months, following this season of quarantining and social distancing. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen a surplus in births after a disaster that forced people to stay inside. However, the overall reaction to this potential “Corona Baby Boom” is concerning on multiple counts and very telling of our pro-choice culture.
During a pandemic leading to a historic surge in unemployment, medical equipment shortages and deaths across the generations, our culture is calling for increased family planning to prevent a baby boom when all of this is over. Why are they so concerned about more babies being born? Because it’s not something for which they can plan.
The pro-choice agenda is about abortion. Abortion and contraception are the answer to everything, even a “Coronavirus Baby Boom.” Most “baby booms” after a hurricane or blackout make for feel-good local media stories about families growing and good coming out of a tough time, not fabricated fears that garner frantic attention over something more pressing, like the current medical crisis going on in this pandemic. This can only be the mindset of a culture that believes babies are not blessings but curses and that sex is not a gift but a right.
Sadly, I’m not shocked that abortion advocates, as many fight for their life in ICUs around the world, are more worried about the possibility of more lives being made. Having interacted with so many abortion-minded mothers and Planned Parenthood workers during my years battling the fight for life, I realize that those in favor of murdering the unborn all share one thing: fear. Fear is a powerful motivator, and evidently, not even a threatening viral illness can dissipate the focus fear has infused into the abortion community.
Those of us on the pro-life side have a timely obligation to exhibit sense when so much of what’s happening right now is senseless. Despite the outbreak, pro-life people do not live in fear of the future. We can continue to follow the guidelines laid out to preserve life and welcome new babies as signs of hope after a pandemic, not a failure. Although we may not be able to continue our fight for life in the ways we normally would as we stay quarantined at home, we can keep advocating for the most vulnerable by offering our prayers and our resources to the elderly, to the newborn and to the expecting mothers.
How we stand together and champion for life during this unprecedented season will speak volumes to the outside world about the compassion, truth and love fueling the pro-life movement.
