Poland Hosts Massive Pro-Abortion Protest

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Poland to protest a law that would ban abortion in the country.

The Huffington Post reports that many Poles, particularly women, were concerned about the right-leaning trend in their country’s government. The protest began when Gocha Adamczyk, a member of the left-wing Razem party, began a movement online against the anti-abortion law.

The movement quickly caught on and thousands of women dressed in black--mourning what they viewed as loss of their reproductive rights--and took to the streets.

The large protest garnered international attention. Women in 60 Polish cities participated, crowding the streets even in the rain, as the below video shows:

The pro-life bill that the women were protesting would have made abortion illegal in all cases, except for when the life of the mother was in danger.

Poland already has one of the strictest abortion laws in Europe, but the new bill, which collected over 450,000 signatures of support, would have made getting or performing abortion a punishable offense.

The bill was rejected, in large part due to the massive protest, but pro-lifers are still working to promote their cause.

“We don’t think the current law is restrictive,” said Karina Wailnowicz, a legal analyst for Ordo luris, a conservative organization. “We actually find it restrictive against kids, and we think it should be liberalized to allow for the full protection of the child. Right now, a fetus isn’t protected by the law, and [it] doesn’t get the same rights as others.”
