The Angel Studios hit film Sound of Freedom passed $100 million in box office revenue Wednesday, barely two weeks after it was released in theaters as a largely unknown movie with little expectation for significant success.
Sound of Freedom grossed $4.72 million Wednesday at the box office to finish No. 2, barely trailing Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One ($4.74 million) but solidly ahead of No. 3 Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($1.58 million), according to data at BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Through Wednesday, Sound of Freedom has grossed $100,905,201 in 2023 to rank No. 16, edging popular films such as Cocaine Bear ($64 million) and the Michael Jordan-themed title Air ($52 million).
Its Wednesday gross was 6.7 percent ahead of the previous Wednesday. Typically, movies fall in revenue week to week.
It has been the No. 1 film in America three times, including on opening day.
"Sound of Freedom has become the people's movie. It was chosen by over 100,000 people in the Angel Guild, fueled by untold tens of thousands through our 'Pay it Forward' program, and is dominating the box office as the result of a ground-up, grassroots movement of everyday people who are making this an historic success," said Jared Geesey, senior vice president of global distribution with Angel Studios. "This is the opposite of the top-down system developed by Hollywood gatekeepers. We are empowering people to be part of choosing, funding and sharing stories that amplify light and impact culture."
Brandon Purdie, vice president and head of theatrical distribution at Angel Studios, told Christian Headlines that Sound of Freedom is reaching a segment of the population that is often "underserved" in entertainment.
"When something is finally offered to that group … they talk and then they come back," he said.
An incredible 41 percent of Sound of Freedom moviegoers say they plan on seeing it again, Purdie said, quoting exit data.
"Normally, if you're 13 to 15 percent, that's a high number," he said. "People are just going back and back and back."
The PG-13 film tells the true story of a government agent, Tim Ballard, who quit his job at the Department of Homeland Security so he could dedicate his life to rescuing children in other countries from sex trafficking. Jim Caviezel portrays Ballard.
