A new poll released this week shows that a majority of Americans disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of national abortion policy.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research surveyed more than 1,200 adults in June.

According to the poll's results, Biden has an approval rating of 41 percent, while 58 percent disapprove of his job performance.

On the issue of abortion policy, Biden’s approval rating was similar to his overall job performance: 39 percent said they approved of his handling of abortion policy, and 58 percent said they disapproved.

About 60 percent of Americans believe Congress should “pass a law guaranteeing access to legal abortion nationwide.” That’s the same number a survey found in 2022.

About 75 percent said they would support a state law that would allow women to obtain abortions if “the child would be born with a life-threatening illness.” In 2022, that number was 77 percent.

If “the person’s own health is seriously endangered by the pregnancy,” support was polled at 86 percent in favor of legal abortions. About 84 percent said they would approve of abortions in cases of rape or incest.

Fifteen states in the U.S. have laws banning all or most abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy, while another three states have abortion restrictions pending litigation.

The survey comes about a year after the reversal of Roe v. Wade in a 2022 court decision in Thomas Dobbs, et al. v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

The survey also found:

  • 54 percent said they support elective abortions, such as in the case of a woman not wanting to be pregnant.
  • 43 percent said they opposed elective abortions.
  • 51 percent said they would be OK with laws allowing abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.
  • 68 percent said they were opposed to allowing abortions 24 weeks into a pregnancy
