'Black Lightning' Star Discusses Faith on Set

Even superheroes need to look for someone greater than themselves. According to a recent article in the Christian Post, lead actor Cress Williams (who plays the DC superhero Black Lightning on the CW) believes God is working through the series to spread the gospel. Williams noted that many of the show’s cast and crew identify as believers, and the project has even given him the opportunity to share his faith on occasion. One such experience happened when a co-worker came seeking marriage advice,

"It turned into this conversation that led to this spiritual conversation about what it means to be a man, a man of God, to be a husband," Williams explained. "That's just the nature of the people that we're around. And then it's kind of rubbed off on people."

What’s surprising is that such testimonies are becoming more and more common within pop culture. Not long ago, Black Panther actress Letitia Wright (who played the unforgettable Princess Shuri) spoke about her Christian faith along with fellow actress Sope Aluko. Chris Pratt, who is best recognized for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, has been vocal about his faith for years, even going so far as to quote scripture after receiving a Hollywood Star. With the success of faith-based films like I Can Only Imagine still fresh in their minds, many Christians hope these stories signal that Hollywood is becoming more open to faith-based ideas and beliefs. For now, Williams seems content knowing the Holy Spirit can work through his show.

Be sure to catch Black Lighting Tuesdays a 9/8c on the CW.
