Al Mohler: Contraceptives and Divorce Paved the Way for Same-sex Marriage

Rev. Dr. Al Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is releasing a new book in which he examines what led to the Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision.

Christian Today reports that Mohler’s new book, We Cannot Be Silent, looks at the issue of homosexuality and same-sex marriage from a Christian perspective. In the book, Mohler says the Supreme Court will be held accountable for their decision to legalize gay marriage, which goes against Biblical standards.

In the book, Mohler also claims that our culture’s obsession with contraception and wide acceptance of no-fault divorce has paved the way for the legalization of gay marriage.

“Long before same-sex marriage was on the moral horizon, many of us were making clear that the divorce revolution was one of the central engines of the breakdown of marriage as an institution," Mohler said. "You can have heterosexual divorce without legalising same-sex marriage, but you really can't legalise same-sex marriage until you've passed the moral threshold of normalising divorce."

Although Mohler makes it clear that he is against same-sex marriage and believes it is unBiblical, he also criticized gay conversion therapy, stating that, although he believes gay people can be transformed by God, Christians should be careful not to reduce “a massive human struggle to simplistic explanations.”

Dr. Mohler’s book will be released on October 27.
