Power Rangers to Feature Lesbian Character

The new Power Rangers film will reportedly feature a character who is a lesbian, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Superhero movies generally are not known for including LGBTQ characters, but the new Power Rangers film is going in a new direction. The film, produced by Lionsgate, is a remake of the popular ‘90’s children’s TV show.

Not only does the film include a lesbian character, but this character is the film’s protagonist. Yellow Power Ranger Trini, played by Becky G, is portrayed as struggling with her sexual orientation. One character assumes she is having “boyfriend problems,” but realizes that Trini is actually having “girlfriend problems.”

Director Dean Israelite said that scene is a “pivotal” moment in the film.

"For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter. "She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."

LGBT representation in films--even children’s films--has been increasing recently, albeit not without controversy.

Disney’s recent remake of Beauty and the Beast featured Disney’s first “gay moment,” when a friend of the villain Gaston experiences same-sex attraction to him.
