Each and every Christian should be clear on this point: Anti-Semitism in any and all forms is a despicable evil. Last month, Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye, made antisemitic remarks on social media about going “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” and while he’s apologized for those specific words, he’s not letting up on other antisemitic comments. And earlier this month, the FBI located the source of a threat to a New Jersey synagogue. These events are occurring against the backdrop of antisemitic behavior rising by a record-high 34% in 2021 from 2020 according to the Anti-Defamation League. Jews are only 2% of the American population, but the FBI has stated they account for more than half of the targeted hate crimes.

Recently, U.S. House Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez stated, “For people who say, ‘I believe it’s a life,’ some people don’t. Our Jewish brothers and sisters, they are able to have an abortion according to their faith!” The central point AOC attempts to make in the video is that because not all religions agree on when life begins, the pro-life movement intends to impose Christian morality on everyone else.

It’s not at all surprising that various religions hold differing views on matters of moral significance. After all, religions don’t agree about whether God exists, who God is. Even so, the consistent reference to Judaism as the counter to “fundamentalist Christianity” led me to wonder whether it is really the case that Judaism supports a woman’s right to abort her child.

Though anti-Semitism often doesn’t receive the attention or the unanimous condemnation that other forms of racism do, the Anti-Defamation League reported 2,100 incidents of assault, vandalism, violence or harassment against Jewish people in America in 2019. That’s the highest number reported since they started keeping track in 1979.
