Dr. Fauci under Fire after Report Alleges U.S. Funded Gain-of-Function Research at Wuhan Lab

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is facing calls to resign after newly released documents allege that the National Institute of Health (NIH) funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, fueling further speculation regarding the origins of the novel coronavirus.

The report, which was over 900 pages long, was published by The Intercept after the outlet obtained it through a Freedom of Information Act request. According to the report, the NIH issued a “bat coronavirus grant” to EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based health organization, for “$3.1 million, including $599,000 that the Wuhan Institute of Virology, used in part to identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans.”

Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, further discussed the report’s findings in a Twitter thread on Monday.

“The materials show that the 2014 and 2019 NIH grants to EcoHealth with subcontracts to WIV funded gain-of-function research as defined in federal policies in effect in 2014-2017 and potential pandemic pathogen enhancement as defined in federal policies in effect in 2017-present,” Ebright wrote.

“The materials confirm the grants supported the construction — in Wuhan — of novel chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses that combined a spike gene from one coronavirus with genetic information from another coronavirus, and confirmed the resulting viruses could infect human cells,” he added.

As reported by The Daily Wire, Ebright also noted that the coronaviruses “could infect mice engineered to display human receptors on cells (‘humanized mice’).”

He added that “The materials further reveal for the first time that one of the resulting novel, laboratory-generated SARS-related coronaviruses — one not been previously disclosed publicly — was more pathogenic to humanized mice than the starting virus from which it was constructed and thus not only was reasonably anticipated to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity, but, indeed, was *demonstrated* to exhibit enhanced pathogenicity.”

“The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful,” Ebright concluded.

Senator Rand Paul, who previously pressed Fauci on the NIH funding of the research, has called on the department of justice to review Fauci’s testimony to Congress, where he denied that the NIH funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab.

“This report should make it abundantly clear that he needs to be held accountable,” Paul asserted.

Meanwhile, several other Republicans are calling for Fauci’s resignation.

“Anthony Fauci has repeatedly and deliberately misled Congress and the American people. Resign. And face a congressional inquiry,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MI) tweeted.

“Fire Fauci,” Sen. Jim Jordan (R-OH) simply wrote.

Fauci, who currently serves as the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, has yet to comment on the recent report.
