Poll: Most Americans Oppose Schools Counseling on Gender Identity without Parental Consent

According to a new poll by the Rasmussen Report, a majority of Americans expressed opposition to schools counseling students on their gender identity without parental consent.

The poll results showed that 26 percent of Americans surveyed said school officials should be allowed to counsel students on their sexual orientation and sexual identity without parental consent, while 60 percent disagreed, and the remaining 14 percent did not comment on the matter.

Along political lines, Republicans (75 percent), Democrats (44 percent), and those unaffiliated with either political party (64) opposed schools counseling kids regarding their sexual orientation and gender identity without parental consent. Additionally, a majority of women (65 percent) and men (55 percent) also expressed disapproval.

The poll also found that 63 percent of Americans approved state laws banning transgender surgeries on minors, such as mastectomies for girls and castration for boys, while 46 percent strongly approved. Conversely, 30 percent disapproved statewide bans on sex change surgeries for trans-identified youth, including 18 percent who strongly disapproved.

Additionally, 73 percent of Republicans, 59 politically unaffiliated respondents and 56 percent of Democrats approved of state laws banning minors from receiving gender transition surgeries. Regarding laws banning the prescription of hormone replacement therapy, also known as cross-sex hormones, to trans-identified youth, 59 percent of poll respondents approved, while 31 percent disapproved.

The poll was conducted from May 24-25 and considered the responses of 1,116 U.S. adults about their views on LGBT ideology. Its release comes amid rising concerns about cross-sex hormones and their possible side effects, including “an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, blood clots and cancers,” according to The American College of Pediatricians.

So far, 19 states have passed laws banning some or all gender transition procedures for minors, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and West Virginia.
