NY Governor Katy Hochul Calls Pro-Lifers 'Neanderthals' after Signing Legislative Package Protecting Abortion

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) recently called pro-life supporters "Neanderthals" as she signed a legislative package to protect "abortion and reproductive rights for all."

Hochul, who signed the legislative package on June 13, delivered a speech on the same day at the Great Hall of Cooper Union in New York City, where the remarks were made.

"This is the United States of America, where freedom and liberty are supposed to mean something," the governor said. "It's the rock upon which we were founded. It is supposed to mean something. Except in the eyes of some Neanderthals who say women are not entitled to those rights."

She also warned that the "sky is on the verge of falling" as the Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case that could lead to Roe v. Wade being overturned. Roe v. Wade is the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

While Hochul initially did not believe that the landmark decision would be overturned, she said that she's praying for "a change of heart" after a recently leaked draft opinion found that the conservative majority intends to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Hochul, who is up for re-election this November, condemned a "persistent assault on women's rights and women's right to determine … decisions about her own body."

"Not here, not now, not ever," she said to applause. "The women of New York will never be subjected to government-mandated pregnancies."

As reported by CBN News, the legislative package will ensure continued access to abortion in New York regardless of the Supreme Court's decision on Roe V. Wade.

Among the laws is Legislation S.9077A/A.10372A, which aims to "provide certain legal protections for abortion service providers, those who assist someone else in obtaining an abortion, or individuals who self-manage an abortion."

The new law prevents courts from cooperating with out-of-state criminal and civil cases that occur legally within state borders.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, Hochul announced last month that New York's Department of Health will allocate $35 million to abortion providers in the state.
