North Carolina Lawmakers Push Legislation to Ban Transgender Athletes from Female Sports

On Monday, three North Carolina lawmakers introduced House Bill 328 which asserts that women should not be "forced to compete against men playing on women's sports teams."

The bill, titled the Save Women’s Sports Act, was filed by state Representatives Mark Brody (R), Pat McElraft (R), Diane Wheatley (R) and Jimmy Dixon (R).

According to Faithwire, in the legislation, the lawmakers referenced a study that was published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine last December. The study, as previously reported by Christian Headlines, found that biological males who identify as female, still surpassed biological females in sports, even after taking feminizing hormones for one year.

"[T]he benefits that natural testosterone provides to male athletes are not diminished through the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones," the bill states. "A recent study on the impact of such treatments found that policies like those of the International Olympic Committee that require biological males to undergo at least one year of testosterone suppression before competing in women's sports do not create a level playing field."

The approval of the Save Women's Sports Act comes just days after South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem issued a "style and form revision" veto for a similar piece of legislation. During a press conference on Monday, Noem announced the creation of a multi-state coalition that would prevent transgender athletes from playing in female sports.

Several weeks ago, Mississippi became the first state to outlaw biological males from competing in female sports after Governor Tate Reeves signed a bill into law. Meanwhile, Tennessee passed a trans athlete ban on Monday through its legislature and was sent to Gov. Bill Lee's desk to be signed.

Earlier this month, Axios reported that Republicans in at least 25 states have introduced 65 pieces of legislation against trans athletes in female sports, as well as hormonal therapies, and gender transition surgeries.

The recent efforts come after President Joe Biden signed an executive order in his first day in office requiring educational institutions receiving federal funding to allow biological males to play in female sports, permitting them to use female locker rooms and restrooms and making them eligible for women's scholarships.

The executive action was met with outrage by many on Twitter as the hashtag #BidenErasedWomen trended.
