Former International Mission Board missionary Robin Hadaway has been nominated for Southern Baptist Convention President, making him the third person to receive the nomination.

Fellow former IMB missionary Wade Akins told the Baptist Press that he will formally nominate Hadaway for the SBC presidency at the 2022 SBC Annual meeting this June in Anaheim, California.

“Robin Hadaway has a passion for missions, evangelism and church planting,” Akins said in a statement. “He believes thousands of Southern Baptists – men and women, pastors and laypersons – need to drop what they are doing and seek a career in home and foreign missions.”

Hadaway is the third person to be nominated to lead the SBC, after Florida pastors Tom Ascol and Willy Rice. Meanwhile, preacher and author Dr. Voddie Baucham, the dean of theology at Africa Christian University, was nominated to be president of the SBC’s Pastors’ Conference.

Hadaway currently serves as senior professor of missions at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Previously he pastored churches in California and Arizona before traveling abroad to the mission field in Africa, where he was involved in church planting efforts in North Africa and Tanzania.

Hadaway’s missionary work also took him to South America, where he served as an IMB regional leader to more than 300 missionaries.

If elected, Hadaway would make an effort to “see 1,000 new WMU chapters started,” Atkins said. “WMU has the backs of our missionaries by providing what’s often lacking – prayer and financial support.”

WMU, or the Woman’s Missionary Union, is an auxiliary of the SBC that focuses on distributing “missions discipleship resources” to churches and individuals.

Before going into ministry, Hadaway served as a U.S. Air Force pilot for four years with the rank of captain. He then worked as a military air traffic controller before ending his service as an administrative officer.

Hadaway holds degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div), Gateway Seminary (D. Min) and the University of South Africa (D.Th.). He also completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Memphis.

Hadaway is married to his wife, Kathy. Together they have three adult children and two young children. They currently are members of New Song Community Church, Oceanside, CA.
