Saints QB Drew Brees Urges Students: ‘Live Out Your Faith,’ Bring Bible to School

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is encouraging students “live out” their faith and bring their Bibles to school Oct. 3 as part of an event sponsored by Focus on the Family.

Brees, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and the NFL’s all-time leading passer, recorded a video to promote Bring Your Bible to School Day, an annual event that will be held Oct. 3 this year.

“One of my favorite verses in the Bible is 2 Corinthians 5:7 – ‘for we live by faith, not by sight,’” Brees says in the video. “So I want to encourage you to live out your faith on Bring Your Bible to School Day to share God’s love with friends. You’re not alone.”

Bring Your Bible to School Day, according to the event’s website, is a day in which “students across the nation will celebrate religious freedom and share God’s love with their friends.”

“The event is designed to empower you as a student to express your belief in the truth of God’s Word – and to do so in a respectful way that demonstrates the love of Christ,” the website says.

Participation is voluntary and student-led. The event is legal, the website says.

“As a student in a public school, you have First Amendment rights to engage in voluntary, free speech conversations in a way that does not interfere with or substantially disrupt classroom time and academic instruction,” the website says. “That means you can voluntarily express your personal and religious beliefs to your classmates through verbal or written expressions, as long as you follow school policy and do not engage in these activities during classroom or instruction time.”

Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal group, offers pro bono legal assistance for students “who encounter unconstitutional roadblocks to their free speech rights,” the website says.

Brees is known for his Christian faith. Last year after he set an NFL record for career passing yards, he was asked what he told his children during a mid-game celebration. Brees said, “It’s probably what I tell them every night before they go to bed, which is you can accomplish anything in life if you’re willing to work for it. Nothing’s given. Everything’s earned. God has equipped us for great works. I tell them that every night.”
