President Biden Is a 'Profile of Moral Collapse' on Abortion, Albert Mohler Says

Author and seminary president Albert Mohler is calling President Joe Biden's evolution on abortion a "profile of moral collapse" and a cautionary tale for those who believe life begins at conception.

In a new column, Mohler traces Biden's progression from someone who says he's "personally pro-life" and favors abortion restrictions to a politician who now opposes even popular pro-life legislation, such as a ban on taxpayer funding of abortion.

Biden, who is Catholic, last week said he doesn't believe life begins at conception – a reversal from an earlier position.

"There are very few profiles in courage in American politics," Mohler wrote in a column on his website. "This seems especially true when it comes to the defense of unborn life. The political predicament of a pro-life politician is this – the political class and the New York-Hollywood-Silicon Valley axis reward those who abandon pro-life positions and condemn those who refuse to surrender.

"A particularly important profile in moral collapse now resides in the White House. The story of President Joe Biden's slippery shape-shifting on the abortion issue is both revealing and horrifying."

Mohler quoted a dozen past statements and positions on abortion by Biden, beginning in 1976, when Biden voted with a majority of senators to prohibit taxpayer funding of abortion. In 1983, Biden voted against allowing federal employees to use their health insurance for abortion. In 1986, he told a Catholic newspaper, "Abortion is wrong from the moment of conception." In 1994, he wrote in a letter to constituents, "Those of us who are opposed to abortion should not be compelled to pay for them." In 2008, Biden said, "I'm prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception."

But when Biden began running for the 2020 Democratic nomination, his positions began to change.

In 2019, he said he now supported federal funding of abortion. As president, he has signed multiple executive orders championed by pro-choice groups. Last week, he told reporters, "I respect those who believe life begins at the moment of conception. … [I] don't agree, but I respect that."

"A half-century career of stating that life begins at conception and that the American taxpayer should not be forced into paying for abortions is now gone," Mohler wrote. "This was a spectacular reversal on a fundamental issue of morality. This sad story is not just about an American politician's compromise. It is not even just the story of an American president and his political "evolution."

Mohler's column was titled, "A Profile of Moral Collapse: President Biden, Abortion, and the Culture of Death." Mohler is president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

"The story of Joe Biden raises important questions we all must answer: How will we define when human life begins?" Mohler asked. "Will we stand upon that conviction, no matter the cost? Our answer to those questions is, make no mistake, a matter of life or death."
