A North Carolina pastor is crediting God’s protection after no one was injured when an automobile crashed into his church’s building and down the sanctuary aisle, mere minutes before a Wednesday night service.

The accident at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Supply, N.C., took place around 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 23, about 45 minutes before a 7 p.m. Wednesday service, when a small SUV crashed through the entrance and over the pews, leaving destruction in its path before stopping around the pulpit area. No one was killed, and the driver had only minor injuries, according to WECT.

The SUV that drove into the church had been hit by another vehicle. The SUV went airborne. The driver of the car that hit the SUV was at fault, WECT reported.

“It is truly a miracle no one was killed or injured,” the church said on its Facebook page.

The church’s pastor, Jesse W. Mooney, Jr., said God was protecting the congregation. No one was in the worship center at the time of the crash, which took place about 30 minutes before members – some of them elderly – normally arrive.

“I was running a little bit late getting here, or I would’ve been here,” Mooney told WECT. “If it would have been 20 or 30 minutes later, that would’ve been several people on that [left] side of the church that was torn up so bad. Some of our older people usually get here early, so it happened that no one was here. God is good. He spared people.”

The crash damaged pews, electrical outlets, walls and moulding, leaving debris all across the worship center. It also left tire tracks on the carpet.

The SUV narrowly missed a wall of cinderblock that could have been deadly for the driver.

“The Lord watched out for us. He is good to us. I told our people last night as heartbroken as we are about the damage to the facility, we can thank the Lord that no one was hurt,” the pastor said. “… Romans 8:28 is very real.”
