Former Trump Attorney General Bill Barr on Monday said he disagrees with the conclusions of the new movie 2000 Mules, adding that he does not believe the election was stolen from his former boss.
Barr made the remarks in recorded testimony that was played by the House Select Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack.
Barr famously sided with Trump in 2019 when House Democrats were pressing to impeach the former president. At one point that year, Trump said Barr had done a "fantastic" job.
But Barr says he disagrees with Trump's assertion that the election was rigged.
"My opinion then and my opinion now is that the election was not stolen by fraud. And I haven't seen anything since the election that changes my mind on that, including the 2000 Mules movie," he said, laughing.
Directed by Dinesh D'Souza, 2000 Mules used cell phone data to allege that approximately 2,000 people ("mules") stuffed drop boxes with ballots in key swing states.
Barr told the committee he was "unimpressed" with the allegations.
"I was holding my fire on that to see what the photographic evidence was, because I thought, 'Well, h--l, if they have a lot of photographs of the same person dumping a lot of ballots in different boxes, you know, that's hard to explain.'"
The film, though, did not have such evidence, Barr said.
"The cell phone data is singularly unimpressive," Barr said. "I mean, basically if you take 2 million cell phones and figure out where they are physically in a big city like Atlanta, or wherever, just by definition, you're going to find many hundreds of them have passed by and spend time in the vicinity of these boxes."
The film's "premise" is "just indefensible," Barr said.
"I saw one contractor who said, 'We figured out that our truck alone would account for six cell phone signals. … Our route would take us by these things on a regular basis.'"
The photographic evidence, Barr said, "was completely lacking."
"It didn't establish widespread illegal harvesting," he said.
