Bernie Sanders Endorses Abortion ‘Up Until the Moment of Birth’

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Monday dismissed the debate over late-term abortion up to the moment of birth, calling it a “political issue” but ultimately saying he thinks it should remain legal.

Sanders made the comments during a Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, Pa., with host Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

MacCallum asked Sanders, “With regard to abortion, do you believe that a woman should be able to terminate a pregnancy up until the moment of birth?”

“Look,” Sanders responded. “I think that that happens very, very rarely, and I think that this is being made into a political issue. … But at the end of the day, I believe that the decision over abortion belongs to a woman and her physician – not the federal government, not the state government, and not the local government.”

In January, New York became the latest state to legalize abortion up to the moment of birth. Virginia considered a similar bill that was backed by Virginia’s governor. Referencing those controversies, during his State of the Union address, President Trump called on Congress “to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother's womb.”

Pro-life leaders criticized Sanders’ comments. Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, called them “total barbarism.” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, tweeted about Sanders, “No moral courage to protect the weakest. Health care for all except the little one on the sonogram.”
