The World Remembers Mary Tyler Moore: 5 of Her Greatest Quotes

Much-loved actress, producer, and author Mary Tyler Moore died yesterday, Jan. 25th, at the age of 80.  Ms. Moore was also greatly known for her years of work and advocacy for animal rights and juvenile diabetes.

“Confirmation of her death came via her publicist. "Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine," Mara Buxbaum told ABC News. "A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile."

She truly did turn the world on with her smile, and so many loved her and somehow identified with her “not so perfect life.” The iconic hat toss scene in her opening song of The Mary Tyler Moore Show will long be remembered as one of the best ever.

Moore gained fame after starring on “The Dick van Dyke Show.” She then went on to star as Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” one of the first TV shows to feature a never-married working woman as its lead character.

Moore earned seven Emmy Awards, five for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She won her first Emmy for her breakthrough role as Laura Petrie in "The Dick Van Dyke Show, and in 1993 she won her sixth for the television movie "Stolen Babies."

Although she was best known for her television work, Mary Tyler Moore also starred in a number of films. She received her first and only Academy Award nomination for best actress in “Ordinary People,” after returning to the big screen in the 80’s.

And maybe what made her so identifiable was the fact that her life wasn’t perfect, just as portrayed in her famous movie role. For behind the beautiful smile were darker moments, of a difficult childhood with an alcoholic mother, of divorce and broken relationships, of the tragic loss of her only son by a self-inflicted, accidental gunshot wound, of life with diabetes, of the battle with her own addiction, and of pain. But yet, through all of that, she still inspired hope and courage to generations.

Hats off to Mary, we remember her best moments and the words of the song that many may find themselves singing today…

“Love is all around, no need to waste it…we’re gonna make it after all.”

Yes we are. No matter what, we’re gonna make it.

5 of Her Greatest Quotes:

“Take chances, make mistakes. That's how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.”

“You can't be brave if you've only had wonderful things happen to you.”

“Having a dream is what keeps you alive. Overcoming the challenges makes life worth living.”

“You truly have to make the very best of what you’ve got. We all do.”

“Whatever it is, it’s OK because it’s what it is. Don’t be looking for perfection. Don’t be short-tempered with yourself. And you’ll be a whole lot nicer to be around with everyone else.”
