In his first on-camera interview since collapsing on the field during a nationally televised football game, Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin shared that God is using him as a “vessel” to help children in need.

Hamlin collapsed on the field after suffering from a cardiac episode during a Jan. 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. This week, the Buffalo Bills released a video update from Hamlin on Twitter. The team captioned the video: “a special message from our guy.”

“What happened to me on ‘Monday Night Football,’ I feel is a direct example of God using me as a vessel to share my passion and my love directly from my heart with the entire world,” Hamlin said in the video. “Now, I’m able to give it back to kids and communities all across the world who need it the most, and that’s always been my dream, that’s always been what I stood for and what I will continue to stand for.”

After Hamlin’s collapse, a 2020 toy drive through his charity, the Chasing M’s Foundation, raised more than $9 million, The Christian Post reports.

“As I embark on my journey to the NFL, I will never forget where I come from, and I am committed to using my platform to positively impact the community that raised me,” Hamlin wrote on a GoFundMe page for a 2020 Toy Drive through the charity.

“I created the Chasing M’s Foundation as a vehicle that will allow me to deliver that impact, and the first program is the 2020 Community Toy Drive.”

Hamlin is from McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania.

In the video, the NFL safety also thanked fans, medical and athletic staff, his teammates and hospital staff for supporting him.

“This is just the beginning of the impact I wanted to have on the world, and with God’s guidance, I will continue to do wonderful and great things,” Hamlin said.

Throughout his recovery, Hamlin has talked about his faith and how God has helped him.

“God is using me in a different way today,” Hamlin wrote from his hospital room.
