During his confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Jeff Sessions, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Attorney Journal, responded to a question about his opposition to the 2015 Supreme Court decision granting marriage rights to gay couples.
Sessions’ answer came in response to a question from California Senator Dianne Feinstein. “On Nov. 14, 2016, appearing on the TV show ’60 Minutes,’ the president-elect said that the issue of same-sex marriage is ‘already settled, it’s law — it was settled in the Supreme Court, it’s done, and I’m fine with that.’ Do you agree that the issue of same-sex marriage is settled law?” He answered, "The majority of the court has established the definition of marriage for the entire United States of America, and I will follow that decision.”
His answer stands in opposition to earlier statements about the decision, which he said was an “effort to secularize, by force and intimidation.”
Feinstein used Sessions’ answer to press him on his opposition to Roe v. Wade, asking why gay marriage is settled law and abortion is not. He responded, "I haven't said a woman's right to choose or Roe v. Wade is not the law of the land… so I'd follow that law."
