Fulfilling the Call to Bear One Another's Burdens

The Bible covers a wide range of topics, offering guidance on what we as believers in Christ need to do in order to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord. While some topics are touched on more often than others, each is included for good reason. Their adherence is vital to living a life in the image of God. One topic mentioned several times throughout the Bible is the importance of helping others.

One of the more well-known verses discussing the importance of helping others can be found in Hebrews 13:16, which states “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” This verse tends to be interpreted with an emphasis on the sharing of tangible assets such as money or other physical possessions that we may have which could benefit someone in need. Whatever we have that may be able to help someone in need, we are to offer it, for it is pleasing to God.

Another well-known verse on this topic, but one that expands on the idea of sharing is found in Luke 6:38, which states “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” In this verse, unlike in the verse from Hebrews, we are encouraged that in return for our giving, we will receive back unto us in due time. It gives the implication that if we help others now, others will help us in our times of need as those arise over time.

A third oft-cited verse regarding helping our fellow brothers and sisters, and one that is often interpreted differently from the previous two, can be found in Galatians 6:2 which states “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Unlike the previous two verses, which are often thought to be focused more on helping others through the giving of tangible items such as money or other physical possessions, this verse from Galatians is often used to encourage us to help one another, physically and emotionally, during challenging times.

While all three of these verses can be interpreted slightly differently, the overarching message between them is clear: we are commanded to help our fellow brothers and sisters during challenging times. For many of us, the most challenging times we will face is when we’re experiencing medical ailments. Medical conditions can create physical and emotional challenges while leaving us with the heavy burden of high medical costs. It’s at times like these being part of a like-minded community, who comes together to assist one another in their times of need, can be so rewarding. That’s where Liberty HealthShare comes into play!

When you become a member of Liberty HealthShare, you’re joining a community of over 200,000 members from all across the United States who help one another pay for their medical expenses. The concept is known as healthcare sharing. It’s quite simple and has been effective for thousands of families since the non-profit organization’s founding in 1995. Each member pays a monthly share amount every month which, along with fellow members’ monthly share amounts, is used to pay any eligible medical bills that members may incur during that month. It’s a classic case of neighbors helping neighbors to provide one another with access to affordable and high-quality healthcare.

While Liberty HealthShare members are there to help each other financially through the sharing of funds to pay eligible medical expenses, they are also able to support one another emotionally through a private web portal, called ShareBox. Upon joining Liberty HealthShare, each member creates an online account from which they can submit medical expenses, pay their monthly share amount, and view the status of their medical expenses. However, that account is for more than just membership tasks. From their ShareBox, members can also reach out to their fellow members to offer words of encouragement and prayer during difficult times. Innovative features like this allow members from all across the country to truly know and care for one another.
