Whatever Happened to Honor and Propriety?

At the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington Saturday night -- which I have deliberately not attended in several years -- President Obama made a joke about the Secret Service scandal. He said he had more material but had to get his agents in time in observance of their new curfew.

Not even Bill Clinton joked about Monica Lewinsky.

Whatever happened to honor and propriety? What became of people who thought so highly of their country that they would not want their conduct to bring shame on America? What's funny about Secret Service agents partying with prostitutes in Colombia? I wonder if the wives and children of those agents laughed at the president's joke. I'll bet they don't think it's funny. And should some of them divorce, the consequences to their children could be catastrophic.

What we tolerate we get more of. We are getting more sleazy behavior because we are more tolerant of it. The president's remarks indicate he isn't taking it all that seriously.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
