Understanding the Stakes of the War

May 3, 2007

President Bush has vetoed a democratic party bill that would have required American forces to withdraw from Iraq on a clear timetable. He was right to do so and he was right in noting this is a long war with freedom at stake for the world.

Unfortunately, democrats see the war as a political opportunity for themselves and their party. The only war they are focused on winning is the political war for the white house next year. They have no plan for victory and no commitment to defeating terrorism, despite their words.

The great democratic party is no more. Senator Joe Lieberman is a leftover from the party’s past. Lieberman understands the stakes and he knows if we don’t prevail in Iraq, the enemy will be encouraged to fight us in Europe and in this country. Islamist web sites portray statements by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that “the war is lost” as evidence American surrender is near. They urge their fighters and killers to fight on because god is on their side against the great Satan.

Too bad most democrats refuse to see what we’re up against.
