On Veterans Day, a day set aside by Congress to honor those who have served their nation by putting their lives on the line to defend our freedoms; we need to be reminded of some things.
First, freedom isn’t free. It is not the natural state of humankind. It must be fought for in order to be preserved. That takes sacrifice, toil, sweat and blood.
Too many take freedom for granted. Too many have either not served in the military, or think it is the job of others, or don’t have a family member in service, or know anyone who does.
While I’m fine with an all-volunteer force, I think it limits a valuable experience to a certain class of people. Those who have never served are missing something special about a privilege and a responsibility that goes with being an American.
Today is the perfect time to thank a veteran. Thank him, or her, for making sure you are free. Thank that veteran for giving up part of his life so you wouldn’t have to give up part, or all, of yours. And encourage people in your family to consider a military experience if not a military career. Somebody has to pay for our freedom, because freedom isn’t free.
