Rumsfeld: Will He Stay or Will He Go

April 18, 2006

At least five retired generals have come out publicly in recent days against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and called for his resignation. Some of them say we should pull out of Iraq as soon as possible. That will encourage the enemy to continue fighting and perhaps with greater intensity, placing our volunteer soldiers in more danger.

Fortunately, other retired generals, including the former Joint Chiefs Chairman, Richard Myers, and Tommy Franks have publicly stated their support for Rumsfeld.

What is to be gained by these negative assertions? President Bush says Rumsfeld has his full backing and confidence. The terrorists have repeatedly said they will wear us down and we will quit because we don’t have the stomach for a long war. They do.

The time to make one’s point is in private and while one has the power. It does not do this country a service to nit pick and back bite to the media once one has retired. These guys should care more for the troops they once commanded.
