Plan to Restrict Immigration Will Increase Security

President Bush has announced he is doing something that should have been done long ago. He will tighten immigration controls in order to keep potential terrorists out of the United States. He will also order that people here in violation of their visas be deported.

We cannot continue to be the America that our parents knew if we allow millions to come here in violation of our laws. The several amnesties granted to illegal aliens have encouraged more to come. The message we were sending was that "you don't have to obey the law. Get here any way you can and eventually you will be allowed to stay."

That must stop immediately. The borders should be closed to all but essential immigrants until we have the time to teach the ones among us how to become Americans and root out those who would harm us.

That's the best way to preserve what we have and protect ourselves from our enemies, who are already among us.
