Private First Class Jessica Lynch bravely resisted her captors, even while suffering two broken legs, one broken arm and at least one broken vertebrae in her back. The 19-year-old apparently took out a number of her captors.
Her rescuers found a torture chamber in the basement of the hospital where she was held. Yes, the hospital. I have seen this tactic used in Lebanon, where the PLO once hid in hospitals and residential neighborhoods so that if Israel attacked them they would create civilian casualties that would be used to inflame world opinion.
This young woman represents the best this country can produce. As a matter of policy, I am opposed to women in combat positions, but no one can detract from the bravery of Jessica Lynch.
The governor of her home state of West Virginia has already promised her a free education at any state university should she choose to attend. There will be other honors and possibly medals.
One military source said this was the first successful rescue of a POW in enemy territory since world war two. Let’s hope it’s not the last.
