Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

Expect new attacks on Newt Gingrich as he leaps to the front of the GOP pack. There are several things to say about this.

First, if the attacks are personal, let him who is without sin cast the first stone because there is no one who is righteous. That's why we all need a Savior.

Second, if the media and other critics of Gingrich were consistent, they would apply the same standards to Democrats. This isn't about morality, or other standards. It is about keeping big government big and growing and in the hands of liberal Democrats. Government is their god and focus of worship in spite of its history of failing to improve lives.

This isn't an endorsement of Newt Gingrich or anyone else. It is a reminder of the real prize in the next election: The complete takeover of government by a mostly conservative party and the rare chance to dismantle big, dysfunctional, overspending and costly government and to free individuals to do more for themselves and to be rewarded for it.

Keep that in mind as you hear about Newt Gingrich or any other Republican who challenges statism and the attempts to keep more Americans addicted to government.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
