They’re coming back to Washington – the freshmen and the veterans…members of congress, preparing to do battle in the never-ending struggle for political control and worldly power.
They’ll hear the president’s state of the union address and his call for working together to benefit America.
They’ll talk a lot about bipartisanship. But they don’t really mean it.
Most are out for themselves. Most want only to have careers in congress with the good pay and better benefits, including a retirement system only they enjoy, but you and I should have.
It isn’t that many don’t come here with good motives. It is that this town corrupts and it isn’t long before even the best are corrupted at some level and start behaving like all the others.
One reason they get away with it is that we don’t pay close enough attention to what they’re doing. There’s no excuse for that, especially with the Internet offering so much information about how they vote and what they say and believe.
Why not resolve this year to keep an eye and an ear on your elected officials? They’ll do a better job if they know you are watching.
I’m Cal Thomas in Washington.
