Godless Graduation

June 20, 2006

Just when you think you’ve heard everything from the politically correct crowd and the secularization of public institutions, along comes another surprise.

Brittany McComb was valedictorian at foothill high school in Las Vegas. Apparently everyone knows she is a Christian. When she got to the part of her address where she was giving thanks, they cut her microphone before she could say “God” or “Christ.”

The 400 graduates and their parents jeered the decision, but county school officials and an attorney for the ACLU said cutting her mike was the right call. I thought the ACLU was on the side of free speech and tolerance for all views, including unpopular as well as popular ones.

School officials edited a couple of Bible references and cut her one mention of Christ. She mentioned him anyway but they turned off her mike before she could.

Expect lawsuits, but that will only help future graduation speakers, not Brittany. My question is: since the government schools are so hostile to Christians, why are so many of our kids still in them?
