Fiscal Cliff Bill Doesn't Help Anything

They did it! Congress has imposed new taxes and cut no spending to speak of, and we are in worse shape than ever. They passed a bill that supposedly saves us from the so-called "fiscal cliff," which they created. It adds $4 trillion in spending over the next 10 years, along with a lot of pork. It does nothing about Medicare and Social Security, the primary drivers of our debt. It is beyond pathetic.

151 House Republicans voted against it, but 85 Republicans voted for it, along with all but a few Democrats. You know the House leadership told their bunch if they didn't pass it, Republicans would be blamed by the president and the media.

The entitlement generation seems to be winning this inter-generational battle. Spending less, living within your means, not hampering the engine of productivity with ever-higher taxes seems to be the norm these days. We can't go on like this, but the majority no longer seems to care. It's all about now and feelings and envy and giving me someone else's earned income without any responsibility on my part. America isn't headed toward a fiscal cliff. It is headed toward extinction.

I'm Cal Thomas.
