Conservative, or Not?

October 4, 2005

Is she, or isn’t she?

Harriett Miers, the president’s latest Supreme Court pick.

Is she conservative, or not?

The immediate answer is we do not know.

Why don’t we know?

Why has the president picked someone with so little track record…like Sandra Day O’Connor, or David Souter?

Conservatives are right to worry because we have been duped before.

We are asked to trust the president.

We might feel better about it if the president had stood and fight for fiscal discipline, but he has not vetoed a single spending bill from this overspending republican congress.

Maybe he’s worried about the liberal republicans who would vote against a conservative.

Maybe she’s ok, but we don’t know.

She’s reportedly an evangelical Christian who also believes in the constitution, as-is.

Vice President Cheney says ten years from now we’ll all feel good about Harriett Miers.

She and the president say she will not legislate from the bench.

But will she overturn bad precedent, like Roe vs. Wade.

We’ve worked very hard for more than three decades to take her nomination on faith, but that is what we are being asked to do.
