Build the Wall

October 30, 2006

The outgoing president of Mexico says the 700-mile fence approved by Congress and signed by the president last week is like the Berlin wall.

No it’s not. The Berlin wall went up to keep people from escaping from a country. This wall will be built to keep people out. And what business is it of Mexico what we do on our own territory to keep people from their territory from coming here?

We have at least 12 million people in this country who have no legal right to be here. Some are in our prisons. Many use our services that we must pay for, including the public schools and emergency rooms. Our officials tell us that an unknown number of terrorists are among them. If a wall prevents more from coming, I say that is a good thing.  Let’s keep an eye on them to make sure it’s built and people can’t climb or dig under it.

And if those illegals who want to be made legal are serious, let’s tell them they can get on a fast track to citizenship by serving in the military. That’s fair, isn’t it? No nation can survive if it doesn’t control its borders and we haven’t been.
