Asking Too Much of Government and Not Enough of Ourselves

Thomas Sowell is a brilliant writer and thinker. He's also African-American. You would think that combination would be enough to be the subject of praise from the media elites. But he's conservative and they ignore him.

Sowell wrote recently: "The fact that so many successful politicians are such shameless liars is not only a reflection on them, it is also a reflection on us. When the people want the impossible, only liars can satisfy them, and only in the short run. The current outbreak of riots in Europe show what happens when the truth catches up with both the politicians and the people in the long run."

The reason we have such debt is that people are asking too much of government and not enough of themselves. Politicians who care more about their own careers and the perks that come with office are all too happy to provide things in exchange for votes. And so the cynicism and the debt and dependency deepen and liberty weeps.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
