An Instruction Book for Beating Your Wife?

Here's a book you are sure to want to get. It's called A Gift for the Muslim Couple, about how Muslim men can beat their wives, or in some cases how a Muslim man can beat his wives.

Yes, indeed, the religion of peace has got a 160-page book published in New Delhi, India, and written by a man whose name I can't pronounce, but who is described in the book's foreword as a "prolific writer on almost every topic of Islamic learning."

The book has sold out in one Indian bookstore. Not to worry. Muslims who want ways to beat their wives, presumably without leaving visible marks as similar books teach, can order it online. In the book's opening pages, there is this: "It might be necessary to restrain her with strength or even to threaten her." Later, the author says the "husband should treat the wife with kindness and love, even though she tends to be stupid and slow sometimes."

It's a far cry from Paul's instructions in Ephesians: "Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church." And in Christ there is no male or female. Religion of peace, indeed.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
