The mass shooting Monday at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard left 12 people dead, plus the shooter. I'm not using his name because he doesn't deserve it. The shooter had a low level security clearance. He received a general discharge from the Navy, which indicates problems. There were several incidents involving misuse of guns before Monday's shooting with a military assault rifle.
The shooter was heavily armed when he entered the Navy Yard. There are no metal detectors at such facilities. There should be.
Officials say they have found no evidence of a terrorist motive, but the shootings came just one week after the head of al Qaeda called for individuals to attack America in a series of small incidents leading up to another 9/11-style attack. The reason: to bleed America dry economically and to cause fear and chaos.
Senator Dianne Feinstein engaged in the usual knee-jerk reaction: more gun laws, as if any law would have deterred this shooter or any of the others. America no longer values human life and that message is getting through to twisted minds.
I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
