A War for the Soul of the World

January 3, 2005

Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today, has called for a pullout of American forces of Iraq on grounds that the cost is too high.

He added that if he were young enough to serve in Iraq, he would do all in his power to avoid it.

Neuharth, who is 80 and a World War II veteran, writes the goal should be to bring the troops home as soon as possible.

What Neuharth ignores is this is not a war like World War II.

This is a war for the soul of the world.

This is a war which, if ended prematurely with a U.S. withdrawal, will send a signal that America is weak and can be defeated not only in Iraq, but everywhere.

It would embolden the Osama Bin Laden's of the world to step up the war and to bring it to America, where we were already hit once on September 11, 2001.

Does Neuharth seriously believe we have a choice in this war or that withdrawing from it will end it?

If he does, he is seriously misguided.

But he's a liberal and they usually are.

Thank goodness the administration will ignore him...and so should everyone else.
