A Minnesota Christian college canceled a scheduled speaking engagement with a pro-life speaker noting that her views were “sensationalized.”
Parker is a conservative social and political advocate, the founder of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) and a born again-Christian.
Despite months of planning, after college administrators looked into Parker, they decided to cancel the event. The administration told the University of Northwestern YAF members in an email that their “main concern is that it is an open event." Administrators indicated that if the event was closed to club members only, "it would be different.”
“Speakers open to all UNW students would have more strictness,” they added
The administration also informed the YAF members that they found Stars views to be radical. In an email to the group they wrote, "Our staff has been very adamant about bringing speakers to campus who educate and expand worldviews, but we really don't bring speakers who radically hold beliefs that UNW as a whole would not agree with.”
The email continued, "In the past UNW has stayed away from sensationalized speakers. I foresee us continuing to do this. After reviewing some of Star's material online we didn't feel she was a good fit for our community."
Following the announcement of their decision, Haley Tschetter, the founding YAF Chair at UNW voiced her disappointment in a press release. Tschetter said, “I was excited to embark on this new adventure and thrilled that Star Parker agreed to come and speak to my campus."
“I thought she could address some relevant topics to our campus. However, many are too fearful of 'controversy' to allow her lecture to take place.”
Tschetter then encouraged people to want to talk “openly and civilly” about difficult issues so that we can start to heal our increasingly divided nation.
According to The College Fix, UNW has not specified which of Parker’s views the administration found sensational but the UNW YAF is asking the administration to reverse their decision.
