After Pope Francis criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and said that Trump is “not Christian,” Twitter users began poking fun at the billionaire businessman.
The Christian Examiner reports that Trump responded to the Pope’s words which accused him of not being a Christian because of his views on immigration, by calling them “disgraceful.” Trump added that he was proud to be a Christian.
Soon after, Twitter users began posting fake quotations of possible Trump responses to the Pope’s comments.
“You know, a lot of my friends are Popes, and they love what I’m doing. This one Pope is such a loser. And fat.' - @realDonaldTrump," television comedy writer Wendy Molyneux posted Thursday.
"How dare the pope be concerned with the poor & disenfranchised! I mean Jesus never was!" tweeted actor Rainn Wilson (@rainnwilson).
Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show,” also weighed in on the fun, jokingly offering choices for how Trump might be able to regain the Pope’s favor.
Colbert’s choices included "Cabinet position," "Purchase indulgences," "Evict Protestants" and "Sensual back rub."
Although Trump is now at odds with the Pope, back in 2013, he had praised the Pontiff saying, "The new Pope is a humble man, very much like me, which probably explains why I like him so much!"
