Transgender Student Files Complaint against School District for Girls' Locker Room Access

A transgender student has reportedly filed suit against the largest school district in Illinois for refusing to allow the student to use the girls’ locker room. The student, whose name has not been released, was born a biological male, but identifies as a female.

The complaint states that the District 211’s denial of access to the girls’ locker room violates Title IX’s sex nondiscrimination protections, according to CNS News

However, District 12 Superintendent Dan Cates said the student was being treated fairly. A private changing area has been provided for the student, and the student is permitted to participate on girls’ athletic teams.

Cates said the district would note allow the student access to the girls’ locker room, despite the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights siding with the student.

“This is about matters of student privacy. What they are asking us to do is have opposite sex students in the same open area of the locker room and that we do not do. This is a matter we take very seriously and this policy would undo that,” Cates said.
