Taliban Attacks Karachi Airport in Pakistan

Taliban militants made an attack on the Karachi airport Tuesday for the second time in 48-hours. According to Reuters, more than 30 people were killed in a security academy at Pakistan’s largest airport.

“We accept responsibility for another successful attack against the government,” Pakistani Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told a Reuters reporter. “We are successfully achieving all our targets and we will go on carrying on many more such attacks.”

The Taliban asserts that the attack was in revenge for a US drone strike.

Late Sunday 10 militants disguised as security force members armed with automatic weapons and grenades murdered 34 people.

“You have extremism in pockets of Pakistan that are pushing the government toward Sharia law, which would be the ultimate goal of the Pakistani Taliban,” David Curry, President and CEO of Open Doors USA, explained to Mission Network News.

The assaults came as peace talks between the government and the Taliban collapsed and the insurgents appeared to be weakening.

“Certainly if the government chooses to try to start siding with the extremists within their population, and they start to impose stricter rules, that will hurt Christians wanting to express their faith in Jesus in freedom.”

Army officials report the airport is now secure and flights have resumed.
