Samaritan's Purse Comes to the Aid of Hurricane Maria Victims

Disaster relief efforts are underway for Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands after Hurricane Maria brought widespread devastation.

Puerto Rico’s governor Ricardo Rosselló has said that power on the island could be out for months. Around a dozen people on Puerto Rico have lost their lives from the storm, but it is feared more will follow if relief crews are not able to provide assistance quickly enough.

According to, some residents have described the devastation caused by the storm as “apocalyptic.”

Samaritan’s Purse, a ministry of the Rev. Franklin Graham, has sent workers and supplies to Puerto Rico to help. The Samaritan’s Purse group was reportedly one of the first disaster relief groups to land on the island after Maria hit.

According to a Samaritan’s Purse update, the organization is assisting with everything from debris cleanup to clean water access. They are also providing aid to other island nations affected by Maria.

“Samaritan's Purse's post-hurricane relief efforts span the Caribbean, as this mapshows, and Franklin Graham is on Antigua & Barbuda today, where he met with local pastors and surveyed the work Samaritan's Purse is doing to help the hard-hit community on Barbuda,” said a press release from Scott Knuteson, a representative at Christian public relations firm DeMoss.

“Yesterday's flight of the organization's DC-8 cargo aircraft marked its tenth Caribbean hurricane relief trip, with more than 212 metric tonsof relief supplies transported. It's making another flight today to St. Martin,” continued Knuteson.
