President Donald Trump is standing behind a tweet where he said Election Day should be delayed because of the possibility of “rigged” mail-in balloting.

“With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” the President wrote on Twitter Thursday.

According to CBN News, Trump said a winner may not be known for weeks or months after Election Day because of lost mail-in ballots and other problems.

“You're sending out hundreds of millions of universal mail-in ballots. Hundreds of millions. Where are they going? Who are they being sent to? It's common sense," Trump told reporters at a White House news briefing. "I want an election, and a result, much more than you. I think we're doing very well. ... I don't want to see a rigged election."

Trump faced a large amount of criticism about the idea of a possible delay after he posted the Tweet, Fox News reports.

"No, Mr. President. We're not delaying the election," Sen.Bernie Sanders said. "The American people are sick and tired of your authoritarianism, your lies, your racism. On November 3, 2020, democracy will prevail and your disastrous presidency will end. Bye-bye."

The Nov. 3 date will not be changed, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said this week.

“@senatemajldr just told me over the phone that the election date is set in stone," WNKY reporter Max Winitz tweeted. "He cited past crises taking place during an election."

A date change to the presidential election would require an act of Congress to change.

Trump’s suggestion of a possible delay of the election comes after vote-counting problems were reported in New York’s mail-in voting election.

New York Democrat candidate Suraj Patel, who is running against US Rep. Carolyn Maloney, has filed a suit because of the problems, saying that 30 percent of mail-in ballots received in his Brooklyn congressional district were discarded.
