President Trump Announces that Millions Will Be Deported Starting Next Week

President Trump announced in a late-night tweet on Monday that millions of people living in America illegally will be deported starting next week.

Trump wrote, “Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States.”

“They will be removed as fast as they come in,” he asserted.

The president also applauded Mexico’s efforts in fixing the crisis at the border writing, “Mexico, using their strong immigration laws, is doing a very good job of stopping people long before they get to our Southern Border.”

This comes after President Trump recently threatened to take action against Mexico if Mexican officials continued to fail to stop people journeying from El Salvador, Guatemala and Ecuador from reaching the U.S.-Mexico border. President Trump threatened to impose a slew of tariffs on Mexico if officials did not increase their border security and immigration efforts.

According to a senior Mexican official, the tactic appears to have worked. Three weeks after making the threat, the official shared that the number of immigrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border daily has dropped from 4,200 to 2,600.

According to the Associated Press, an Administrative official who wished to remain anonymous told the outlet that the action would firstly focus on the over 1 million people who are still living in the U.S. despite being issued final deportation orders by federal judges.

The AP reports that other anonymous officials said the plan was not immediate and ICE officials did not anticipate the action being announced publicly. Reportedly, however, some close to the President believe the announcement can be used as a deterrent to others attempting to enter the country illegally.

Immigration – particularly the issue at the southern border – has been a key issue for Mr. Trump during his first term as President. He is expected to crack down on the issue as we head into the 2020 Presidential Election.
