President Joe Biden’s approval rating dropped to a new low in December as the U.S. continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a new CNBC/Change Research poll, 56 percent of voters now say they disapprove of the job that Biden is doing in office. It is the lowest approval rating Biden has received thus far. At the time of this writing, Biden is just a few weeks away from being in office for one full year.
A previous poll in September showed his disapproval rating at 54 percent. In April, that number was 49 percent.
In summary, Biden’s approval rating is currently at about 44 percent, where it was 46 percent in September and 49 percent in April.
Among many concerns, respondents to the poll said they were primarily concerned with the state of the economy.
“The White House is scrambling to quell fears about price acceleration and inflation, resurrect the president’s Build Back Better climate-and-family legislation, and rejuvenate the country’s public health response as the omicron variant drives a new spike in Covid cases,” a report from CNBC said.
Men and women in every age group said the economy is the top priority for them. Only Black respondents named racism as their top priority. They listed the economy as the second most pressing issue.
Sixty percent of respondents in the survey said they disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy. About 72 percent disapprove of his handling of everyday items, and 66 percent said they disapprove of his efforts to “help their wallets.”
According to CNBC, the unemployment rate is down to 4.2 percent from 6.3 percent, and average hourly earnings are up 4.8 percent. About 73 percent of the U.S. population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, but Biden’s administration is still struggling to convince voters that the U.S. is progressing.
“Respondents tend to blame Biden (38 percent) for the price increases versus the global pandemic (26 percent) or corporations (23 percent),” the CNBC article says.
