Pennsylvania Teachers Visit Mosques, Undergo Islamic Culture Training

A group of 50 Pennsylvania public school teachers recently attended a training on Islamic culture and religion and visited a mosque to better accommodate Muslim students in their district. Christian News Network reports teachers from the Lebanon School District attended the workshop, along with the district’s superintendent.

The teachers learned about Arabic culture and observed an Islamic prayer service. They were also given an opportunity to ask questions to better understand the religion and culture.

Mohamed Omar, who served as the president of a mosque informed teachers that it is okay for students to miss one of Islam’s five daily prayers if they are immersed in their studies at the prayer time.

Mosque founder Hamid Housni expressed his gratitude for the training, saying, “I think this is the first time ever in the United States that a school district goes to a mosque. Usually a representative of a mosque goes somewhere. We don’t have words to explain to you how we appreciate that.”

Others criticized the event, arguing that if the trip had been to visit a church, secularists would have complained.
