One Million Christians Prepare for Pilgrimage to Rome for Easter

At least one million Christians are preparing to travel to Rome to observe Holy Week and celebrate Easter.

According to Christian Today, security in Rome has been heightened in the wake of recent events in Syria and Egypt and the increased violence directed toward Christians in many areas of the world.

Tourists say they are saddened that the extra security measures are needed, but that it does make them feel safe.

“We feel very safe. It's always heartbreaking to see the need for all the security,” said one tourist. “Everything is quite controlled. There are a lot of police, lots of military.”

Pope Francis will also be in Rome for Easter and will take a central role in the Holy Week events and Easter celebration.

The Pope will lead a Good Friday service in St. Peter’s Basilica at 5 p.m., followed by the Via Crucis or Way of the Cross at the Colosseum.

On Holy Saturday, the Pope will conduct an Easter Vigil at the Basilica, beginning at 8:30 p.m. On Easter itself, he will preside over Mass in St. Peter’s Square and will pronounce a blessing over Rome.

Many of the Christian pilgrims will take part in these events as they observe Christ’s Passion and celebrate his Resurrection.
